This thesis is concerned with time-dependent free-boundary problems at low Reynolds numbers. The primary objective is to use a combined experimental and numerical investigation to examine the deformation and breakup characteristics of a single phase Newtonian liquid drop suspended in a second immiscible Newtonian fluid undergoing a prescribed linear flow. Two related studies grew naturally out of this work and are also discussed here: (1) an analytic and numerical examination of the behaviour of concentric double emulsion droplets in linear flows, and (2) an introduction to the effect surfactants have on drop deformation in extensional flows.

To meet the growing demand of its customers in China and Asia, those seeking innovative solutions in terms of flavor and fragrance, International Flavors & Fragrances has announced the opening of the new Creative Center in Shanghai. The center includes establishments creative and cutting-edge applications and an analysis of the consumer. This research center will allow both IFF and its clients achieve a deeper understanding of the needs and preferences changing with this very dynamic region.
This center, located in the North in the Putuo District of Shanghai, provides an attractive environment and customer-oriented to stimulate the creation of flavors and fragrances. This consolidates the presence of IFF in Asia, and is part of an ongoing comprehensive program to expand and modernize their facilities in order to capitalize on strategic growth opportunities.

Kiadis Pharma has announced that Andrea Velardi, MD, professor of Clinical Immunology at the University of Perugia (Italy) and Kiadis Pharma will continue their collaboration on ATIR (TM), a product in clinical development to enable the use of a poorly matched donor in a bone marrow transplant preventing graft versus host disease (GvHD) for leukemia patients undergoing final. Under the agreement, Professor Velardi continue the development of selective reduction of T cells alorreactivas poorly matched donor using the proceeds of Kiadis Pharma, ATIR (TM). Kiadis Pharma is preparing for a pivotal multicenter study on ATIR (TM) to begin in early 2009 and Professor Velardi participate in this next survey.
