The top management of Helsinn Healthcare announced that it has signed a partnership agreement with Zealand Pharma, for the development and global marketing of ZP1846, a GLP-2 receptor agonist (glucagon-like peptide of type 2) provides that a new way to treat chemotherapy-induced diarrhea (CID), a debilitating condition that effects patients undergoing cancer treatment with a series of chemotherapy.
Under the terms of the agreement, Helsinn Healthcare will receive an exclusive worldwide license for ZP1846 and will be responsible for all development, regulatory approvals, manufacturing, marketing and sales of the compound itself and through its sub-licensees. In turn Helsinn Healthcare will pay Zealand Pharma milestones of development and sales milestones for an amount not disclosed. In addition, Zealand Pharma will receive rights to future sales and Zealand Pharma holds the marketing rights for the Nordic countries. The total value of the ratio are not duties that the association is 140 million euros.
Zealand Pharma has applied its knowledge of peptide optimization and its proprietary technology SIP (r) to develop ZP1846, one of a series of new peptides that specifically improving the growth and function of the line the intestine. ZP1846 has completed Phase 1 in humans in the U.S. Preclinical studies of Zealand Pharma have demonstrated that ZP1846 is useful in the prevention and treatment of damage to the intestinal epithelium caused by the treatment of chemotherapy, resulting in a reduction in the incidence of diarrhea induced by chemotherapy. Currently, there are serious gastrointestinal side effects in up to 50% of patients who undergo certain forms of chemotherapy, which in turn may require dose modification or termination of chemotherapy for cancer.
