In a ceremony held at the 24th Annual EAU Congress in Stockholm, Sweden, the Astellas European Foundation announced the winner of Urology 2009. Dr. Wouter Everaerts, MD and his team at KU Leuven, Belgium, received a cash prize of U.S. $ 300,000 to support their work in investigating the role of channel transient receptor potential (TRP or by Advertisement its acronym in English) in the bladder.
The Astellas European Foundation is a registered charity, founded in 2005, with the long-term objective to provide support for programs and activities that contribute to the advancement of a society increasingly healthy. Award of Urology Astellas European Foundation was established in 2006 to recognize the strong commitment of urology with Astellas. Since its inception, the program has provided more than 1.2 million U.S. dollars to support basic medical and scientific programs that contribute to advances in urology.
The winning research proposal for this year's Award of Urology Astellas European Foundation was chosen by a panel that included independent European opinion leaders in urology. Each proposal was evaluated independently by each member of the panel based on a variety of scientific criteria. Dr. John Bolodeoku, director of Astellas European Foundation and vice president of medical affairs and health economics for Astellas Europe commented:
"We received 31 projects from 12 European countries and the Foundation would like to acknowledge all those who submitted excellent proposals. As always, the standard of these projects was extremely high, covering a wide range of topics of urology. However, the research project Wouter Everaerts doctor and his team was winning a unanimous and clear, with a high score by the panel. The research project will provide vital information to advance our understanding of the role of TRP channels in the bladder
