Diamyd Medical has announced that Swiss Medical Products Agency has approved a study of diabetes vaccine Diamyd (R) in children CONALTID risk of developing type 1 diabetes.
"Immunize children against diabetes has been since the beginning of a long-term goals of Diamyd Medical, dijoElisabeth Lindner, director general and CEO of Diamyd Medical. "Type 1 diabetes is a chronic and very serious and would be nice if we could prevent it now. It would avoid a lot of anxiety, suffering and costs for children and their families, as well as for the rest of society."
At the University Hospital of Malmö in Sweden, the exhaustive exploration of evidence lead to the continuous identification of children who are subject to a very high risk of developing type 1 diabetes. Measuring different markers in blood samples, it is possible to identify at an early stage that these children are in the process of autoimmune disease that destroys insulin-producing cells.
If the vaccine Diamyd (R) succeeds to intervene in the disease process before many of the cells of insulin are destroyed, the disease may be prevented. The child was rid of the symptoms and not become dependent on insulin injections for survival, which otherwise could not be avoided.
"We see these children every three months and we know that virtually all type 1 diabetes. Many of us as pediatricians we have been frustrated by not being able to interfere. But now, and I must admit that it seems almost unreal, we first a real opportunity to save these children from the disease, "dijoHelena Elding Larsson, Malmö pediatrician and researcher at the University deLunden Sweden.
The study includes approved under the current approval, 50 children from 4 years to a high risk of developing type 1 diabetes. The study will be randomized and placebo controlled.
