Ptrochemical Engineering: COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS

Natural gas has traditionally been carried in pipelines and ships and more recently in subsea pipelines needed to meet growing global demand of oil.

Until the beginning of the century submarine pipelines are the best option for transportation of natural gas when it was little short distances and topographical features. If the distance was greater shipping is preferred by the use of tankers, but this technology is still being developed to achieve a lower environmental impact and lower cost.

By September 2006, the Canadian Sea NG Corporation received approval from the American Bureau of Shipping for the construction of a tanker capable of transporting compressed natural gas (CNG), which would become the first of its kind.

These vessels, called Coselle, whose main function transport moderate amounts of natural gas (30 to 500 MMpcs).

The Coselle was created and patented in Canada by David Stenning, James Cran, John Fitzpatrick, based on the idea that the pipeline serves as storage and as a driver of natural gas.

The system consists of a pipeline of 16 km of small diameter coiled into a spiral, where the gas is stored at high pressure. Containers where the hose is wound are called Coselles, which serve to give protection is much cheaper than pressurized steel cylinders.

The size of a Coselle varies between 15 and 20 meters in diameter and between 2.5 and 4.5 meters high with an approximate weight of 550 tons carrying capacity of 3 MMpcs natural gas.

The Sea NG Coselle System, which introduced this technology company, began construction in late 2006 a fleet of 16 vessels able to load Coselles each.

The importance of this technology is that it contributes to the supply of natural gas to markets without service do not constitute a significant demand do not justify the investment in liquefied natural gas projects, projects that require a great investment. Likewise the use of this technology is recommended when submitting distances less than 300 km. because it avoids the difficulties typical of deep water environments which are presented at time of construction of submarine pipelines.
