Disinfection in water treatment

There are several methods for a proper disinfection of wastewater. It's good to know the characteristics of each of these technologies in order to choose the one best suited to treatment of water we want to perform.

The Ozonation
One option for disinfection is ozonation. Ozone, may spread in the air of wastewater directly reacting with organic matter. As a result, generated a series of chemical reactions involving radicals. Some of these reactions, have the ultimate effect of water disinfection. Generally, ozonation is effective in removing bacteria and virus groups. It also includes a number of advantages: eliminates odors, does not produce other dissolved solids, and has the ability to increase the oxygenation of the effluent without affecting its pH. The technique is performed in situ, using commercial kits. When the content of organic matter in water is very high, it takes comparatively high ozone dose to achieve a successful disinfection.

Chlorine dioxide
The use of chlorine dioxide is considered a more reliable alternatives to avoid the conventional chlorination. It has proved a very effective oxidant used in water containing phenols and successfully removes the odor problems. However, this technology has a downside: oxidized iron, manganese, nitrites, and a large number of other compounds.

It can react with ammonia, nor with bromine.
Should be performed in situ, as it is quite unstable.
Ultraviolet Radiation
Is the effect produced by a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, nucleic acids and proteins. With this mechanism, it alters the process of reproduction of some pathogens. Generally, radiation is used to 253.7 nm, this being the most suitable for these processes. It is very effective, mainly to fight bacteria and viruses.

The lamps used are of high, medium and low pressure, low pressure being the most commonly used to disinfect wastewater. For this treatment of water is important to check to disinfect the effluent contains a small amount of suspended solids. One of the most common drawbacks of ultraviolet radiation, is the cleanliness of the corresponding lamps.

Finally, note that we do not mention the traditional chlorination. The same, although it is widely used for water treatment problem is the high generation of products.
