Air pollution has always been an unwanted byproduct of human activities, and has probably had harmful effects on human health since the prehistoric people discovered fire.

The problem increased with the growth of cities, the practice of arts and trades, and the extensive development of industrial growth that began in mid-1800.

The continuing structural change in post-industrial society, including a decline in traditional industrial operation (coal and steel industry) and a simultaneous increase in the importance of the service industry, leads to a significant change in emissions, with the consequent reduction in the degree of population exposure to air pollutants.

The land can be divided into heavily polluted industrial regions and regions with supposedly clean air as the amount of pollution, mainly due to ever increasing traffic and the reduction in the release of harmful substances from stationary emitters (power plants, domestic heating and cracking plants).

At present, areas with high traffic density in rural areas can sometimes reach up to higher concentrations of pollutants emission areas where traffic density is lower in spite of large cities.

The rising incidence of previously unknown emissions has led to potentiate the effects of these other pollutants on the health of the population. And substances typical of motor vehicles (mainly benzene, nitrogen dioxide and ozone), the chlorinated organic compounds play a continuing growing in the human population exposure to pollution (including some secondary accumulation foodstuffs).

It has also been a significant increase in air pollution. Changes in living conditions, the use of new types of building materials, and changes in patterns of behavior (inadequate ventilation) have led increasingly to the deterioration of health.

That's why today's trend of large industries is the development of clean technologies to avoid further deteriorating our sensitive ecosystem.
